A Weekend at the Beach in Brazil

Saturday, 5:40 a.m.

Although most of us had gone to bed late Friday night, the group decided to wake up in the morning to watch the sunrise. Alex, Carol, Abby, Natalie and I dragged our bodies to the beach by 5:50 a.m. The girls were joined by the boys who surprisingly had an ample amount of energy for 5:50 in the morning, After being serenaded to ‘Beautiful Girls’ by Sean Kingston by Malcolm, Jermaine, Jibri, and Charles, we watched the sun peek over the hilltop. Riviera de São Lourenço at sunrise is undeniably one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. The vivid pink and purple colors were mesmerizing.

Saturday, 9:00 a.m.

After eating a delicious breakfast of cheese, breads, fruits, and cereal the girls headed down to the beach. We spent the day lounging on the beach, going into the ocean, walking up and down the beach, and eating ice cream. We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather after a week of rain in Campinas. As much as I loved sitting out in the sun, the cold winter months in Pennsylvania had not prepared my skin for the sunny Riviera de São Lourenço, and although I had applied sunscreen multiple times, I (and most of the group) unfortunately got burnt.

Saturday, 7:00 p.m.

It was about a twenty-minute walk from our apartment complex to the strip mall. After eating we decided to go bowling, where things got interesting to say to the least. My bowling skills included kicking and throwing, and my personal favorite, army crawling. (Some of these methods were more effective than others.) Sam managed to roll a gutter ball almost every time. The night concluded with the girls getting ice cream. It was the perfect way to relax after a long week!

Sending lots of love to Mom, Dad, Yash, and Louis.

Sunday

I was woken up by Jibri’s distinctly loud voice coming from the kitchen around 10:30 a.m. I walked out of my room to get breakfast and realized that I was the last one to wake up. By the time I sat down with my bread and cereal, Alex, Carol, and Mahek were already leaving for the beach. Although I usually am a total beach bum, I was sunburnt so I decided to stay inside with Jibri, Charles, Malcolm, and Jermaine to watch some of the premier league games on TV. After watching a few games, it was time for lunch. We had delicious pasta, rice, and salad, while watching more soccer. Around 3:00 p.m., the girls and guys separated to clean our apartments and get ready to leave. At the request of Carol’s mom, I went to the boy’s apartment to collect their dirty sheets. I took five steps in the door and had to run out because of the smell. Boys are gross no matter where they are in the world. A couple hours later, we were packed and ready to get onto the bus. We embarked on our three-and-a-half hour car ride back to Campinas, and everyone fell asleep. After a nice nap, we woke up at a burger place. We spent about an hour and a half at the restaurant doing the Macarena and singing along to all the 80’s music they had playing. I also made the waiter a paper crane, but when I handed it to him he seemed very confused as to what I wanted him to do with it. After dinner, Mahek and I returned to our host family. It was so nice to see them again after a weekend away. All in all, it was a great, relaxing weekend.

Xoxo,
Natalie
